Artist Spotlight: Mark Maia Creator and Writer

Hey there! I'm Mark Maia the creator and writer of So-Called Living! 

I've spent more than 25 years in the video game industry, but comics have always been a passion of mine. So-Called Living is the project I've always wanted to make.

From the first script to the final lettering, every issue is a chance to tell the kind of story I love: action, horror, comedy, and characters who never seem to make the smart decision.

Creating comics is a team effort, and I'm incredibly fortunate to work with talented artists, who help bring this world to life. My job is to dream up the story, then work with an amazing team to make it the best book we can.

Whether you've been reading since Book 1 or you're just discovering So-Called Living, thank you for being part of this journey. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I've enjoyed creating them.

Mark Maia is a writer and creative director with over 26 years of experience across comics, video games, and interactive media. He is the creator and writer of the comic series So-Called Living. Mark has also contributed writing to Toronto Comics, including work published in Volume 2.

In the video game industry, Mark has worked as a writer, game designer, and creative lead on more than 70 titles. His credits include projects with Big Blue Bubble, Disney, Fox, Mattel, DICE, EA Games, Nintendo, Nickelodeon and Skybound Entertainment. His work on a Fox-published title earned a BAFTA Award, recognizing excellence in interactive design and storytelling.

Mark brings the same mix of humor, heart, and imagination to his comics that he’s known for in his other creative ventures.
