Artist Spotlight: Derek Laufman

Artist Spotlight: Derek Laufman

Hey there, Brittany here!

Derek was our first So-Called Living Guest artist that we brought on board to start the Elite Variant Cover Series. Mark and I have been friends and industry colleagues with Derek for years. Mark has had the opportunity to work with Derek in the past  but this was my first time working with him and I was super excited to see how he would bring a new cover to life. I'm a huge fan of Derek, not only is he an awesome person, but he is extremely talented.

Who is Derek Laufman?

Derek Laufman is a veteran comic artist and illustrator with over 25 years of professional experience, based in London, Ontario, Canada. A graduate of Sheridan College’s classical animation program, Derek has created his own acclaimed comics and graphic novels, including Ruinworld, Bot-9, The Witch of Wickerson, and his latest series, Crimson Fall.

He has also worked with major brands and publishers such as Marvel, DC, DreamWorks, TOPPS, Hasbro, and Mattel, and is currently the artist on Skottie Young’s I HATE FAIRYLAND from Image Comics.

Why Derek Fits the Elite Series

Our Elite Series is limited to just 500 copies and is reserved for artists whose work brings storytelling and craftsmanship to the highest level. Derek’s art perfectly complements So-Called Living’s blend of urban grit, supernatural tension, and character-driven storytelling.

His Elite cover for Book 1 feels cinematic, moody, and intentional — a true collector’s piece that stands apart from standard variants.
